Syria provided the United States with intelligence on al-Qaida after the Sept. 11 attacks. But President Bush ordered sanctions against Damascus a year ago after longstanding complaints that Syria was supporting terrorism and undermining U.S. efforts in Iraq Â allegations it denies.

I guess those sanctions didn't forbid the importation of terror suspects for questioning by Syrian authorities.

Other countries used in the renditions program include Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Morocco.

Stem Cells and the Culture of Life

There is some legislation up in the mix that would allow for the expansion of federal support for embryonic stem cell research. Guess what comes marching out...if you said "culture of life" you win!

"The use of federal dollars to destroy life is something I simply do not support," Bush said at the White House.

I'm sure that sentiment is a comfort to all these folks.

The president declined to answer a question about what should be done with the many embryos left over from fertility treatments.

"The issue that involves the federal government is whether or not to use taxpayers' money that would end up destroying that life," he said.

Read that as "I'm a simplistic pussy who would prefer not to address a really complex issue".

Several Senate sponsors, including Republicans, forged ahead nonetheless as they accepted the House-passed bill with a photo-friendly red bow affixed to it.

Dazzle Bush with purty bows and he'll be sure to forget the veto. Seriously. A red bow. WTF?

Bush, whose veto would be the first of his presidency, says he opposes the bill because it would open the way for federally funded research that could create life to destroy it.

I swear, Bush knows nothing about this issue other than that one talking point and goddamn if he ain't gonna hammer that one note until Gabriel's trumpet sounds, praying that he's in the same key for the endtimes. Bush hasn't fucking vetoed a think in 5 years. I hope that this legislation gets pushed and pushed just to call his bluff. If Bush does veto it, I know who will be doing some dancing; it isn't Dobson and company, it'll be these people. They'll be waving to us as their scientific development moves by leaps and bounds leaving America's researchers in the dust.

SAN FRANCISCO - California's highest court was asked Tuesday to create a legal framework for what constitutes a family as justices weighed parental rights for lesbian couples who broke up after having children.

This problem wouldn't be nearly as sticky if gays could simply, I don't know...marry, or at least have civil unions. But instead we have a child custody/child support shit fight that doesn't look simple to resolve.

On the other side were two women seeking to retain sole custody of their children, and a woman who argues she should not have to pay child support for her former lover's twins. Their lawyers warned if someone without a biological, marital or adoption-related claim on a child can legally assert parental rights, it would open the door to all sorts of custody disputes.

"There will be no limit to the numbers of companions, be they related or not, to single parents making claims of parentage," said attorney Diana Richmond, representing a woman seeking sole custody of the twin girls she bore with her former partner's donated eggs.

I think that legally holding gay relationships to the same standard as straight marriages is an important step in getting gays legally married. It allows gays to keep pointing out that they have relationship problems just like straight folks and that they want to hold their partners legally accountable for serious problems that arise. Gays aren't looking for exceptions here, they're looking for equality under the law.

I know I just posted about Amanda Marcotte but she has another post that must be noted and can be found here. Has it really been that long? In the amount of time that it took us to fight WW2 where we defeated the Germans and the Japanese we have spent the same amount of time fighting the war on terror? Amanda has a lot of good points but there is one other that I want to say that she forgot. We had Hitler on the run so hard that he killed himself. He killed himself like the little bitch he was to escape the justice we were bringing to him. That's how fucking serious we were about getting Hitler and ending the war.

Contrast that with how we're treating Bin Laden. As I posted here we really don't seem so concerned with him at all. Bin Laden is the guy who masterminded 9/11 and we still haven't brought him to justice. The Greatest Generation drove one of the most heinous mass murderers to his death. We let mass murderers continue to live and plot more crimes, what the fuck?

Amanda Marcotte replaced Ezra Klein over at Pandagon. Amanda is really amazing, she has a fantastic writing style and sharp intellect. I would say her balls are so big that they scrape the ground but with her being a woman, that description is not so accurate. It's probably better to say she busts balls like a 9 pound sledge hammer; however, she fucks up punk ass right winger women just as quickly as the men. So she isn't exclusively in the business of busting balls so to speak. Still a better term might be that she has got a ton of moxie, a shit ton really.

If you want an idea of how much moxie she has read this post where she eviscerate conservatives who are calling for the boycott of the Star Wars movie:

This is all beside the point, except to point out that by boycotting the film as part of the all-important non-combat war effort, the Fighting Keyboardists are probably just drumming up more importance for what is, like it or not, just a sci-fi movie. My theory is that this entire shit-fit has nothing to do with Lucas's politics, however. I think that's just a cover for the real problem conservatives have with Star Wars--it's competition.

Think about it--the Republicans need fresh recruits, and where else to get them than by leaning heavily on virginal young men who like the idea of war but don't necessarily want to get their hands dirty? Star Wars is mucking up their entire sales pitch by offering a safe outlet for those battle fantasies that doesn't have the moral quandries that come with being a hypocritical and cowardly war blogger. Plus, you can meet people, possibly even the occasional woman, while standing in line for the film.

Ok so that was a much better example of ball busting than moxie but you get the idea: this lady is a total fucking bad ass!

Uzbekistan, one of our apparent allies in the war on terror has been having some problems with antigovernment demonstrators and prison breaks. I used to wonder why Uzbekistan was our ally, especially since they have a little problem with torture. But hey, we would never support torturers, would we.

But then I read this article and found out exactly why we are allies with the Uzbeks: they are cut from the same neocon cloth.

First they imply that all people opposed to the government are terrorists:

"Not a single civilian was killed by government forces there," prosecutor-general Rashid Kadyrov said.

Therefore killing them is ok.

Next blame the liberal media:

President Islam Karimov, who abruptly joined the news conference while Mr Kadyrov was speaking, has criticised Western and Russian media for biased reporting.

"There is a broad campaign in the media, especially in the Western media, to be ahead of events... and to show that Uzbekistan is a tyranny, that in Uzbekistan they shoot innocent people," Mr Karimov said, raising his voice.

"Who would shoot at people who do not have weapons?

Especially not this government. Finally, wipe hands clean and call anyone who disagrees with you stupid and against God:

FDA to Implement Gay Sperm Donor Rules

NEW YORK - To the dismay of gay-rights activists, the
Food and Drug Administration is about to implement new rules recommending that any man who has engaged in homosexual sex in the previous five years be barred from serving as an anonymous sperm donor.

Here's the way to get around that:

Question 1: Are you gay?
Answer 1: No.

Question 2: Have you had hot gay sex in the past 5 years?
Answer 2: No.

Apparently the FDA wants to reduce the risk of HIV being transmitted though sperm donation. That's a good thing. However, as this person points out, barring gay men from donating is not the way to go about it:

"Under these rules, a heterosexual man who had unprotected sex with HIV-positive prostitutes would be OK as a donor one year later, but a gay man in a monogamous, safe-sex relationship is not OK unless he's been celibate for five years," said Leland Traiman, director of a clinic in Alameda, Calif., that seeks gay sperm donors.

Traiman has a great idea about screening ALL sperm donors:

Traiman said adequate safety assurances can be provided by testing a sperm donor at the time of the initial donation, then freezing the sperm for a six-month quarantine and testing the donor again to be sure there is no new sign of HIV or other infectious diseases.

Because it takes time for HIV antibodies to titrate up to detectable levels in people this is just a sound practice for all donors.

Anyway, I think that this is actually less about HIV then it is a thinly veiled attempt to reduce the spread of the so called "gay gene".

Iraqi special forces soldiers Ali Jabbar and Mohammed Ali insist they mete out justice fairly. They beat only the prisoners they know did something wrong, not the innocent ones.

In March, when a rocket attack on one of their bases missed the target but angered the soldiers, they searched the area and found two suspects.

"You want to know the truth? My arms are still tired from hitting those guys," laughs Mr. Jabbar in an interview along with Mr. Ali in Baghdad.

The report detailed methods of interrogation in which prisoners were beaten with cables and pipes, shocked, or suspended from their wrists for prolonged periods of time - tactics that are more associated with Saddam Hussein's dictatorship than the democracy that is beginning to take root in that country.

In fact, many of the old members of Saddam Hussein's security forces are filling the ranks of the new police units and security forces. And many of these hardened soldiers practiced in the brutality of his regime initially received no Western-style training, says Robert Perito, an expert on post conflict security at the US Institute of Peace.

Colonel Hatch comes up with a quote that maybe we should be taking to heart instead of all the rendtions that we use:

"What we emphasize is the need to break from the past practices of the former regime," says Hatch. "Another thing is to convince them that these tactics and procedures are less effective. By treating detainees humanely, we have seen information is more accurate than from coerced sources."

But Jabbar and Ali's motivations don't stem from corruption or blood thirst. To them, beating people that they feel are guilty is avenging the deaths of fellow soldiers or ridding their country of the people trying to destroy it.

They abuse prisoners only when, Ali says, they "find evidence they are real terrorists. If there is no evidence, we respect them." He says that his superior officers don't condone the abuse. "If they kill [a prisoner] and he is unarmed, they will punish us," he says.

Believe us, we are really REALLY sure they are guilty, really!

Judge Throws Out England's Guilty Plea

I'm not totally surprised by this after reading the article. Apparently, Graner who is serving 10 years for the abuse scandal is saying that the pictures taken of the Iraqi prison abuse where to be used for training other prison guards:

During defense questioning, Graner said he looped the leash around the prisoner's shoulders as a way to coax him out of a cell, and that it slipped up around his neck. He said he asked England to hold the strap while he took photos that he could show to other guards later to teach them this prisoner-handling technique.

Beside the fact that these guys have apparently never heard of handcuffs or a fucking zip-tie to get prisoners out of cells, how the hell do you explain the human pyramids as part of guard training? Well apparently England's story didn't jibe with Graner's:

When England pleaded guilty Monday, she told the judge she knew that the pictures were being taken purely for the amusement of the guards.

Pohl said her statement and Graner's could not be reconciled.

"You can't have a one-person conspiracy," the judge said before he declared the mistrial and dismissed the sentencing jury.

I don't know what she's hoping for. If she had just towed Garner's line she might have gotten off with a pretty light sentencing. Now, I hope but I'm not holding my breath, they'll blow this thing up and really examine what happened there.

Abortive Pro-Lifers

I got this article via Pandagon (now Version 2.0). It's a really good article exploring the few women who are pro-life but decide to get abortions. Some of these women turn to being pro-choice and some remain very pro-life. It's not anything earth shattering as the article is mainly a bunch of compiled anecdotes.

I just have a few comments about the article and people's reaction to it. Most people are screaming that these women are hypocrites. Everyone is entitled to make mistakes, we have to be the bigger people and help them to correct their mistakes and to help them see the benefit of learning from their mistakes. Calling them hypocrites is only making their agonizing decision all the worse. Yes, some don't change despite how much you do for them but some do, and letters like this one are encouraging:

"I never dreamed, in my wildest nightmares, that there would ever be a situation where I personally would choose such an act. Of course, we would each like to think that our reasons for a termination are the exception to the rule. But the bottom line is that you people spend your lives, reputations, careers and energy fighting for, maintaining, and providing an option that I needed, while I spent my energy lambasting you. Yet you still allowed me to make use of your services even though I had been one of your enemies. You treated us as kindly and warmly as you did all of your patients and never once pointed an 'I told you so' finger in our direction. I got the impression that you cared equally about each woman in the facility and what each woman was going through, regardless of her reasons for choosing the procedure. I have never met a group of purely non-judgmental people like yourselves."

The only other problem with the article were the following letters from two doctors:

"Early in my career, I thought I was obligated to provide an abortion for every woman who arrived at my doorstep requesting an abortion. My experience in general medicine, surgery, and abortion has led me to believe differently. Not inadvertently, women give either me or my staff an uneasy feeling about their ambivalence or their anxiety about the abortion process. Since I have never been sued for an abortion I did not perform, my policy is to acknowledge my gut feeling, which is more often right than wrong."

and

"I have long felt that anti-abortionism is a psychological contraindication to the abortion procedure. And that we don't have to give everyone who asks an abortion. An anti-abortion woman is likely to be uncooperative and will probably not follow post-op instructions or instructions on how to deal with complications. There is actually a case where an anti-abortion patient failed to go as directed to Emergency for an unrelated complication. She ended up dying, and her family sued the physician and badgered him publicly. Additionally, if you have a complication that day, it will be the anti-abortionist. I'm not talking about the patient who says, 'I was against abortion until it happened to me', or 'I'm really against abortion, but I have to do this'. I'm talking about the picketer, the activist, the totally anti-creature who will come back to haunt us."

It's unfortunate that I have to make this comparison but these doctors remind me of the Pharmacists For Life group that are asking pharmacists to refuse filling birth control prescriptions on moral grounds. Granted, the difference here is that the abortion doctors say that they are limiting their liabilities but they are still refusing medical treatment.

There are several ways for abortion doctors to limit their liabilities:
-mandatory pre and post operation counseling.
-mandatory post operation check up.
-medical waivers.

I am not saying that the doctors do not ever have a right to refuse treatment. Please do not misunderstand that. However, I think that the doctors have an obligation to provide their services to everyone who needs them. If the doctors are going to refuse treatment then refusal should be the last option. Even then, the doctors should attempt to assist the patient in finding another doctor who will look at the case.

Concert Ticket Blogging

I hope that this is the first ever publication of concert ticket blogging. I don't know, but I hope to start some shit. Anyway, as you can see from the ticket I went to the Prefuse 73 show this weekend. On a scale of 1 to 10, these dudes came out and wrecked shop (11).

I really don't know when I've enjoyed a show so much. For those who don't know, Prefuse 73 is a project by Scott Herren that is mainly electronic in nature. I was expecting him to just come out and DJ the set but he actually had a live band to recreate his sound. They played a mix of his earlier work and cuts from the new album "Surrounded by Silence".

I've heard a lot of junk about "Surrounded by Silence" because he has MCs like Ghostface, and Masta Killa on the album. All I have to say to that is: fuck the haters. Or if you want to be 1337 about it: Fuk teh h8rz. That album is good. Unfortunately, the tracks with the MCs are some of the weaker cuts on the CD but that doesn't keep the songs from being enjoyable. The problem I have with those tracks is that some of the MCs featured are not suited for Herren's electronic-snap-crackle-pop instrumentals. This doesn't mean that either are bad, just mismatched.

But I digress from the show. Did I mention it was good? Of course Herren didn't have the MCs come on tour with him so they played a strictly instrumental set. The band was tight, DJ good, overall catch these guys while you can.

One last thing. A DJ/Producer that goes by the name of Nobody opened up the night and performed with the band. Keep an eye on this dude. He's hot stuff. The set he played was slick and mixed with expert precision. I picked up one of his CDs at the show which I'll try to do a review of later, I just need to figure out what exactly I want to say about him other than his work in nothing short of impressive.

I think that this article is really cool. Apparently researchers at UCLA have produced tabletop nuclear fusion:

For years, scientists have sought to harness controllable nuclear fusion, the same power that lights the sun and stars. This latest experiment relied on a tiny crystal to generate a strong electric field. While falling short as a way to produce energy, the method could have potential uses in the oil-drilling industry and homeland security, said Seth Putterman, one of the physicists who did the experiment at the University of California, Los Angeles.

It seems like this experiment was pretty tightly done because it didn't throw the little things out the window:

I finally finished my huge meeting. It was a pre-proposal defense meeting to see if my committee would give me the green light for writing my proposal. Eventhough the meeting went really well I was still nervous as all get out. It's hard work trying to convince some of the leading authorities in a field that you're worth a damn. Which leads me to this post over a Tbogg. David Horowitz rubs me the wrong way to say the least but what really gets me is things like this:

I finally heard the collobration by Murs and Danger Mouse called "Paint By Numbers" that was produced for the Genocide in Sudan compilation. Goddamn is it a good track. DM comes in with a gut churning instrumental that is practically flawless: blues guitar loop over a haunting vocal. The track perfectly complements Murs who just slayes the lyrics with a rollercoster of emotion that seems almost impossible for one song: venom, anger, compassion, frustration, despair, and hope. For a backpack rapper with a punk rock braclet, Murs has definately proven that he can hold his own lyrically.

During the life of an artist there seems to be several approaches to releaseing subsequest material. If you make apples you can use the seeds to refine your farming skills and produce sweeter ones later. Or you can take a delicious apple that you've made and grind it to a pulp and let it rot in the sun like "Black Dialogue". Furthermore an artist can take their highly polished apple and use it to make apple pie. You might have not been expecting apple pie but goddamn is it fine. Finally, an artist can bring you a crips apple, the type of legendary apple that tempted Adam, then turn around and next deliver you a Buick. You'd normally say what the fuck, but this Edan, and the Buick is mighty fine.

It is nearly impossible to compair "Beauty and the Beat" to Edan's previous work simply because it's like nothing he's ever done before. His rhyme style, granted, has remained intact, the usual slick wordplay and metered cadence are all present on the album. Production on the other hand is completely different utilizing 60's psychodelic infused rock. The closest piece of work that "Beauty" can be compaired to is Danger Mouse's "The Grey Album"; however, there is a huge difference. DM remixed loops from "The White Album" to put over Jay-Z's lyrics. Edan, produces all his own beats and made the instrumentals himself for his own lyrics. Edan made a claim in "Primitive Plus":

Edan fulfills that earlier claim again on "Beauty", he does everything. And with a CD weighing in at just under 35min there is very little room for error. There is no filler, no crap, no fat to trim, each beat and line is crafter with wicked precision.

Edan once again challenges people's perception of hip-hop. He has effective taken the pervebial envelope and not pushed it but burned it to ash. He then took the leftover carbon and compressed it into a diamond of incompariable brightness. Although 3 years is a long time to go between full length releases, with quality like this you'll have plenty to bump before he blesses us with his next gem.

I got a fat box of CDs in the mail the other day. One Album, "Black Dialogue", by The Perceptionists I was really excited about. The Perceptionists are made up of Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, and DJ Faks One. All of these dudes are hype, Mr. Lif's "I Phantom" album is easily one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. What's cool is that when these dudes get together crazy hype shit happens:

-Show Starter
-Medical Aid
-The Avengers

Guys, I'm only saying this because I love you all. Mr. Lif, that Iron Helix joint off of I Phantom was a life affirming experience. Ak, Say Yes Say Word, off The EP is some phat shit. But guys, this is some tough love here but "Black Dialogue" is pretty fucking weak.

It was nice of you all to try to resurrect Humpty Hump for Career Finders, but that track was wack. We don't need another song mocking fake gangstas becoming rappers.

And please, the almighty Guru couldn't breathe life into Party Hard. You guys aren't club music, you're fucking better than that!

Memorial Day? Come on were you fucking board one day and came up with this shit? Where's the anger from tracks like Get Wise '95? The refrain sounds like a weak protest song.

There are some butter bangers though that manage to lend some light to the otherwise pathetic tracks.

-Love Letters: for as campy as this song is, I do like it. It's well written and the beat is nice.

-Black Dialogue: Now this is what I'm talking about! This is the strongest track on the album and what I expect from the raw talent that makes up The Perceptionists. Guys, this is straight quality, the rest of your album should shine as brightly as this track.

-5 O'Clock: Butter smooth, pump this in the car with the windows down.

-Breathe in the Sun: Borders on being overproduced but overall a really nice song.

Nothing could have stopped me from owing this album simply because Mr. Lif and Ak are some top rappers but they need to tighten up and find their hunger again. I would have preferred an EP or something, burn bright and go out with a bang on an album, don't give me some half hearted shit.

This is why health care is not a market. Because in a market, you limit your liabilities. In health insurance, your liabilities are the sick. In health care, the aim is to cover the sick. In private health care, the aim is to turn a profit, and thus you have to ignore the sick and cover the healthy. It just doesn't, it just can't, work.

This sort on inconsistency needs to be pounded out when trying to align health care with a capitalist freemarket system. I don't really expect people to understand that though. From the comments:

The problem isn't quality differentiation (although that is a separate problem) the problem is that it isn't profitable to provide health care to people who need lots of it. The market does a bad job of providing health care to people who can be identified as heavy health-care users; if we don't want those people to die in the streets, we need non-market solutions.

When I first heard him I thought he was really stupid. But after listening to him for a while I was crying I was laughing so hard. It just took me some time to get used to his style.

I went to the park and saw a kid flying a kite. The kid was really excited. I don't know why, that's what they're supposed to do. Now if he had a chair on the other end of that string, I would have been impressed.

I've heard about this before but it looks like it is gaining legs. Overall this really pisses me off as the pharmacist has no business knowing why I'm taking certain medication. One Pandagon commentator points out just that:

a lot of women use the Pill for reasons beyond birth control. I am a lesbian on the Pill for polycystic ovarian syndrome. I have sister who is a virgin who is on the Pill for irregular & painful periods-- without them she can't function. Neither of us are married. Neither one of us are having sex with men or need the pill as a contraceptive.

If we permit this, where do we draw the line? What about treatment for STDs? What if one of them believes they're God's way of punishing the wicked? Or what if they refuse to give people AZT meds because they think AIDS is God's punishment for being gay? Should they have the right to do that?

And for a woman who wants to get the morning-after pill? What if she was raped the night before? IS THAT ANY OF THEIR BUSINESS?!!? We're adult women taking legal drugs, pharmacists have no right to interfere with our access to legal medication that our doctors have prescribed.

I'm still waiting for these "Culture of Life" fucks to refuse the following medications to women:

# Antibiotics - some of the drugs used to treat infection can cause a range of birth defects, including yellowed teeth, soft tooth enamel and damage to the inner ear.
# Anti-cancer drugs - these shrink cancers by stopping the cancer cells from multiplying. Similarly, they can interfere with the baby's cell growth. Defects include stunted growth, cleft palate, spinal defects and mental retardation.
# Anticonvulsant drugs - are taken by people with epilepsy to prevent seizures. Some anticonvulsants can cause birth defects, such as cleft palate, abnormal facial development, deformed organs and mental retardation.
# Benzodiazepines - such as tranquillisers and sleeping pills. Problems in newborn babies include difficulties in suckling and an overall limpness that can last for months.
# Dermatology drugs - like isotretinoin and etretinate are sometimes used to treat acne and other skin conditions; they have a very high risk of causing permanent birth defects.
# Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) - such as aspirin. NSAIDs can bring on premature labour.

Cries of "Bias" Have Deranged The Right

Not too long ago I attended a seminar at my university about making Science Policy into a career. The speaker wanted to impress on us some of the differences between the world of science and the world of politics. Most of it I had heard before, like making your own language to control debate etc. Another thing that she said is that everything in Washington is negotiable, even scientific facts like E=MC^2. Everything is negotiable, even Terri Schiavo.

Oliver forgets this fact in this post. Here he talks about the medical examiners that have diagnosed Terri:

Not one of these physicians is remotely qualified or credible. Not. One. Every medical professional that has written on this case, or spoken about it on tv and the radio, who isn't part of the rapture right or a simply discredited "doctor" has made clear that Terri Schiavo is beyond help. Most of them have not made a judgement whether she should be hooked up or not, but rather have stated the facts and their observations based on the medical evidence they have on hand.

True, none of these doctors that say Terri will get better are credible. You probably wouldn't want them within 10 miles of you if you even had a common cold. However, it doesn't matter that these doctors are not credible because Terri has entered the realm of politics.

This is as cut and dry as it comes when you look at the word of medical science, because you can't simply reinterpret the data in order to come up with an outcome more favorable to your side. In this world of medicine, the outcome is life and death. There really isn't a whole lot of latitude for "bias" in the world of diagnosing the symptoms of a malady.

Unlike so much else in our world, there is actual living and breathing "truth". It says a lot about the Republicans and the far right that they simply reject the truth because it doesn't fit their pre-defined narrative version of the truth. Some of us would say this is how they look at everything, and why we've come to this point where people who encourage domestic terror are on the same side as the President of the United States.

According to medical science, Terri will never get better. That doesn't matter to the wingers though. All they have to do is to redefine what "persistent vegetative state" means and voila! there is now medical cause to keep Terri alive because she doesn't fit the definition of PVC. Like I said, everything is negotiable, even scientific facts. Believe me, as a scientist I don't like that idea; however, politics plays by another set of subjective rules and when you politicize science guess what usually wins out? Politics.

Yesterday I wrote this post wondering when the Republicans would start inviting pregnant women in for questioning to prevent the women from getting an abortion. The turn-around time to link Terri with the abortion issue? Less than 24 hours:

In fact imagine if Terri was anything but a white women. Imagine if she were a Muslim man, a Chinese woman, or a Black infant. Today's a sad day if you're into cars. John Z. DeLorean passed away at the age of 80.

I really like the DeLorean and John DeLorean's passing reminded me a true and funny story of my growing up. When I was 14 or 15 me and two of my buddies, Joe and Fred, names changed for the hell of it, went to the beach with Joe's mom during our summer vacation. It was a blistering Sunday and we went for a walk down the road to see what was around.

Just so happens the we pass a used car dealership. Well, we would be driving soon so we were interested in what they had on the lot; being Sunday we weren't chased off by any salespeople.

On the lot was, no lie, a DeLorean and we nearly shit our pants. Fred tried the door and for some unknown reason the car was open. I guess the dealership was hoping that someone would just steal it. Joe and Fred scuffled for a minute to see who could get in first. I stayed back because they both out-weighed me by about 30 pounds. Fred pushed Joe down and jumped in the car and slammed the door.

We were pissed because we wanted to get in too so Joe tried the door but it wouldn't open. Fred tried to open the door from the inside but guess what, it wouldn't open either. Neither door would open from the inside.

Fred was trapped, a 14 year old trapped in a used DeLorean on a car lot at midday in the south. Fred started to sweat and Joe and I were scared that he would bake in the car. We ran back and got Joe's mom, who then called the cops. They also had to send an ambulance to assist Fred so he wouldn't get too overheated. The medics ended up feeding him an oxygen line though a crack in the door so he could get some fresh air. The police got him out ok, he was fine, just needed some fluids.

Anyway that was the high point of the vacation. My parents were good natured about it and actually laughed their asses off. In retrospect it was pretty hilarious. So here's to you John DeLorean, thanks for such a cool car. Furthermore today's Hip Hop Lyric of the Moment will be dedicated to you.

I'm going to try to get one this summer. Event though my parents and my girlfriend both know that I do not want to be kept alive if I'm in a persistent vegetative state I probably need the legal backing so right wing motherfuckers don't try to keep me alive. Rice Wants to Export Mad-Cow Disease To Japan

Security Council on Friday, and put pressure on the Japanese to end a boycott of U.S. beef imports, Bush administration officials said.... The Japanese ban, in response to discovery of a mad cow-infected cow in the United States, has become the most visible blemish on what has otherwise been an increasingly tight relationship between Tokyo and Washington.

That's not a blemish. That's a smart move by the Japanese to protect the health of their citizens. Well, what's the payoff? Especially considering that

It just happens to be that that US will endorse Japan as a member of the U.N. security council:

A Job Ain't Nothin' but Work

"Vintage" by All Natural

My first introduction to All Natural was through their song "50 Years" that my buddy slipped in on a mix CD that he gave me. "50 Years" is an amazing song, populated by a gorgeous piano loop and a deep satisfying bass line. Capital D's lyrics flow like honey, in short, the song makes you glad to be alive.

What's incredible about "50 Years" is that pays a homage to golden age hip hop by looking to the future but it doesn't use golden age hip hop as a gimmick or a crutch like Jurassic 5 does. I like Jurassic 5, but let's face it, despite their amazing lyrical talent and their cutting edge DJs, they have managed to pidgon hole themselves as a new age Sugar Hill Gang. It's a shame really, and I hope on their next release they try to branch out a little.

But I digress, this post is about All Natural. Anyway, All naturals "50 Years" is so good you almost hope that they never release another song because you can't bear to see such brilliance polluted by mediocrity. Thank god they didn't stop.

All naturals latest album "Vintage" cements the groups staying power. Production is tight with enough experimentation and variation to make the listening experience interesting. With the exception of track 2, Capital D's lyrics and the beats flow seamlessly weaving a beautiful soundscape that coats your ear with a silky smooth goodness. The CD flows nicely from head-nodders to chill-out tracks but never loses it's sense of consciousness and brilliant word play.

As you can tell I love this CD. I think that this is one of those solid CDs that are timeless like Public Enemy or Run DMC. 50 years down the line you can still play this album and nod your head to it. Pick it up if you haven't already.

Sean Hannity, this morning, talked about visions and the differences in visions. My perception is that this prevailing vision at the U.N. is one that is based on rights, but rights without responsibility. Family, whatever you want it to be. Sexual freedom, anything goes. Practically every resolution that goes before the U.N. somebody tries to figure out a way to put in "reproductive services." There are many that view marriage as an oppressive institution that represses women and denies them of their opportunities. Mother has become an undesirable stereotype. Children are better cared for by the state than by parents. Parental leave is the solution in many countries because women need to always be out in the work force and we need to have government parental leave so that the women can take at least a little time, or maybe the husband, so the woman should stay in the work force, and the husband should stay with the children for a short period of time before they go into a daycare arena.

I guess she forgot her taking points memo at home and needed Hannity's show as quick reminder before the big talk.

To keep up with the torure policies of America I wanted to post this article that Rumsfeld has been cleared of wrongdoing.

U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the Pentagon's top brass were exonerated yesterday of accusations that they ordered, or turned a blind eye to, the brutal torture and humiliation of detainees at Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison.

That's pretty bad but the one shining light is:

But although Vice-Admiral Albert Church reported no blood on the hands of the U.S. high command, his findings failed to persuade many of those who believe President George W. Bush has set a permissive and extralegal tone for the war on terrorism.

Bush still isn't off the hook for the prison abuse where

six detainees have died in more than 70 proven cases of abuse in Afghanistan and Iraq, and reveals that the U.S. military was holding an estimated 50,000 detainees in shadowy circumstances as of last September.

Emphasis mine. I'm not going to hold my breath that Bush will be held accountable for any of this, people would rather swallow a grenade that allow the president to be held accountable for anything.

Some of Mr. Bush's staunchest supporters appeared to be in denial about Abu Ghraib, a year after the horrific pictures of abuse and sexual humiliation emerged.

"I don't need an investigation to tell me that there was no comprehensive or systematic use of inhumane tactics by the American military, because those guys and gals just wouldn't do it," said Senator Jim Talent, a Republican from Missouri. "Everything about the culture and the training in the military and at home works against that. That's why the terrorists are attacking us -- because we're not the kind of society that would do that."

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt. WTF is that last sentence supposed to mean? The terrorists are attacking us because we don't torture people. Therefore, the terrorists want to be tortured? If that's correct than those terrorists should just love the abuse that is going on rather than get pissed off about it. Oh yeah, and military training goes against prison abuse? I'd agree with that, but that doesn't mean that it won't still happen. I can declare that proper scientific training wouldn't allow for ethics abuses, which it doesn't. However, sometimes systematic ethics abuses still occur. Mr Talent (R-Cock Knocker) pretty much thinks that abuse is necessary, eventhough there is a mountain of studies showing it doesn't work to get reliable information:

"Speaking for myself, if our guys want to poke somebody in the chest to get the name of a bomb maker so that they can save the lives of Americans, I'm for it," he said.

Right, and how does sticking your finger in a person's chest campare with sodomozing someone with a glow stick, threating electrocution, beating detainees to death, and leaving people naked and exposed to freeze to death at night? Oh yeah, it doesn't. And some one give this dude a fucking medal for nailing a topic on the head:

Others were not so sanguine. Democrat Senator Carl Levin noted acidly that the scope of Vice-Adm. Church's investigation didn't include detention and interrogation practices by the Central Intelligence Agency.

He also said that exonerating top leaders sends the wrong message to Americans and the rest of the world.

"This failure of accountability of senior leaders sends the wrong signal to our troops and to the American people. It harms the United States's standing as a nation of laws, and it undermines the high standards of our armed forces," Mr. Levin said.

Class Warfare- My Take

If I may, I would like to post on the recent allegations of class warfare coming up over the new Bankruptcy Bill, others have much better postings about the details of this bill so read their takes on it. But in short The Rude One and others are crying out class warfare in regards to this bill. I agree it is class warfare; however, I do not think that the poor Republican voters believe that this is so.

If there is one thing that the Republicans are awesome at is making people vote against their self-interest. According this this article:

In nine out of the 10 poorest counties in Kentucky, for example, places where the Democratic Party of Harry S. Truman ran roughshod over Republican adversaries, George W. Bush won, frequently by margins the mirror image of Gore's in the nation's richest and best educated counties.

These new voting patterns are changing the composition of the House. According to a study by the National Committee for an Effective Congress of the 88 congressional districts that shifted from Democrat to Republican from 1994 to 2000, 59 had average incomes below the national norm, and in 68, the percentage of residents with college degrees was below the national average.

There is no class warfare that Republican voters see because they are all part of the same party. Party affiliation is made to be more important than economic self-interest. Furthermore, misdirection against the ever-present liberal boogyman or terrorist combined with an obnoxious level of self-victimization continues to take the eye off the economic ball. The Republicans (especially Rove) have told these voters that the Democrats will raise their taxes and take away their values/rights. This is effective because you scare people who have little into believing that if they vote for the Democrats then they will have less. This works even if the Republicans flagrantly pander to the rich or never deliver on their tax breaks because all they have to do is remind their base that the Democrats don't respect their values. It's actually a brilliant cycle that they've created. Completely heinous, but brilliant.

It's going to be tough to win this one back. The Republicans have done great at digging in their base on both ends of the economic spectrum. The rich are the cash cow and the poor bring in the votes to keep them in power. Right now, in addition to figuring out how to fight a new brand of politics we also need to find a way to divorce these two polar opposites from each other in the Republican party. Divide and conquer. How do we do that? I don't know. Most hypothetical scenarios I come up with ended by getting muted in a media blitz. I just hope that someone like this dude can figure out how to do it. Hell, his damn fundraising emblem is the DFA bat, now there's someone speaking my language.

For the 0 people who are long time readers of Blue Balls, they all know that medical care and biomedical research are my favorite issues, Media Girl is clearly after my heart.
